Meditation is basically the witnessing, witnessing to your everything. You can witness to your thoughts, then you are not that thoughts. You can witness to your dreams, then you are not that dreams. You can witness to your memories, then you are not that memories too.
Eliminate one by one through witnessing. Then one day will come when there will be nothing but you, the seer. This is the main purpose of meditation. Meditation is just to be, not doing anything, no action, no thought, no emotion. You are not the doer; you are simply the watcher.
You cannot do meditation, you cannot practice meditation, you can only to understand it. Meditation is not against action, not escaping the life. It simply teaches you a new way of life by which you become the center of the cyclone. The essence of meditation is to learn how to witness.
The first step is to witness to your body. Slowly you become aware to your gesture, movement etc. In this way you become more aware to yourself, more relaxed, more attuned as many things which you used to do before, simply disappear.
Then next step is to witness to your thoughts. Thoughts are more subtle and more dangerous. It damages more. Become aware of your thoughts and you will be surprised to know what is happening inside you. A mad man is running inside you and that is being ignored for any reason. It affects whatsoever you are doing or not doing. It affects everything. The Sum Total of these thoughts is going to be your life. To stop this mad man, you need not do anything, just need to become aware and witness. The more you witness this mad man, it starts disappearing. You will be at peace.
In this way, when your body and mind are at peace, you will notice that they are attuned to each other and there is a bridge. For the first time they are not running in different directions. They are not riding different horses. There is an accord. With the help of this accord, you will get to know what your feeling is. You will know about your emotions, mood etc.
